With Deaf characters appearing on shows like "Switched at Birth," "Criminal Minds," and "CSI," it is obvious that the public's fascination with American Sign Language (ASL) continues to grow. The idea of communicating with the hands instead of the voice fascinates us because while we think of sound as essential to communication, we also realize that the face and body can convey just as much emotion with no sound at all. When language is seen rather than heard, the visual aspects of the world come alive. The setting and characters are explored from different angles and distances. Critical action is shown in slow-motion for dramatic effect or sped up to create excitement. In effect, the language is 3D. A skilled American Sign Language story-teller paints a picture for the audience that allows them to see the story play out in from of them like a film. In "MrShineyhead Presents: A Storytelling Extravaganza!" Patrick Fischer uses his extensive theatrical training and his expertise of American Sign Language to depict a range of characters, settings, and moods that keeps the audience on The Edge of their seats.

In addition to touring with The National Theatre of the Deaf (NTD) and performing with Northwest Theatre of the Deaf (NWTD), Patrick has performed solo across the nation. Patrick has also joined such notable Deaf performers as Peter Cook and Crom Saunders on stage. Patrick launched his theatrical business this year, providing various services to those who want to learn more about theatre through the eyes of Deaf individuals. He recently volunteered his services for a non-profit organization to help raise funds to provide workshops and performances in ASL Literature. When Patrick is not "working" in theatre, he teaches ASL and is a certified ASLTA instructor at Portland Community College under the Sign Language Studies Program, as well as at the Northwest Academy (a private middle and high school) in Portland, OR.
